Top 10 Documents You Need for Any Visa Application

OOpen Visa Global Team7 min read

The documents nearly every consulate asks UAE residents for — plus the specification details that cause rejections when they're wrong.

The Universal Baseline

Requirements differ by destination and nationality, but this set appears in nearly every application made from the UAE. What causes problems is rarely a missing document — it is a document that is present but wrong in a detail nobody mentioned.

1. Valid Passport

Most destinations require six months' validity beyond your intended entry, plus blank pages.

The detail people miss: some countries, China among them, require the blank pages to be adjacent to each other. Pages scattered through the passport do not satisfy it.

If a previous visa for your destination sits in an expired passport, several consulates expect you to submit that old passport too.

2. Photographs

This is the single most common technical rejection.

Specifications differ by country — the Schengen standard is 35x45mm meeting ICAO biometric requirements; the US has its own. Background colour, head size within the frame, expression, and whether glasses are permitted all vary.

Do not reuse a photo from a previous application to a different country. Our photo checker verifies your photo against the destination's specification before you submit.

3. Completed Application Form

Sign it. Match every field to your passport exactly — spelling, date format, name order. A form that says "Mohamed" where the passport says "Mohammad" creates a discrepancy the case worker must resolve.

4. UAE Residence Visa

Your residence permit should remain valid well beyond your return date. Many consulates specify a minimum remaining validity, and most will not accept an application from someone whose residence has expired or been cancelled.

5. Emirates ID

Front and back. Submitting only the front is a routine cause of an incomplete file.

6. Bank Statements

Usually the last three to six months, stamped by the bank. An unstamped printout or a screenshot from an app is generally not accepted.

What matters more than the balance is that your statements are consistent with your declared income. A large unexplained deposit shortly before applying is one of the most common triggers for additional scrutiny — if it is legitimate, evidence its source rather than leaving it unexplained. Run yours through our financial evidence checker before you submit.

7. Salary Certificate

On company letterhead, recent, stating your position, joining date and salary. It should match what your bank statements show arriving each month.

8. No Objection Certificate (NOC)

From your employer, confirming they have no objection to your travel and typically noting your approved leave dates. Several consulates treat this as standard for UAE-based applicants. Generate one with our NOC letter tool.

9. Travel Insurance

Requirements vary. The Schengen Area requires a minimum of EUR 30,000 covering the whole area for the whole trip, including emergency treatment, hospitalisation and repatriation. Other destinations set their own thresholds or none at all.

10. Cover Letter

The document most applicants treat as optional and consulates treat as informative. It should state who you are, why you are travelling, how the trip is funded, and what brings you back. It ties every other document into a single coherent account. Draft one with our cover letter tool.

Bonus: Accommodation and Flight Reservations

Use refundable reservations for the application. Buy the actual ticket after the visa is issued — booking non-refundable travel first is a costly habit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to translate documents into English?

Documents in Arabic or English are generally accepted across the destinations UAE residents commonly apply to. Documents in other languages usually need certified translation — check your destination's requirement.

How recent do bank statements need to be?

Usually issued within the last month, covering three to six months of activity. Both the period covered and the issue date matter.

Is a complete checklist enough to be approved?

No. Completeness means nothing is missing. Approval depends on whether the documents genuinely support your stated purpose, funding and intention to return.

What if I'm self-employed or a business owner?

You'll typically be asked for trade licence, company bank statements and proof of ownership in place of a salary certificate and NOC. Expect closer examination of the financial picture.

How We Help

Our document review reads the actual file rather than ticking a list — checking that statements support the declared income, that photos meet the destination's specification, and that names and dates are consistent across every page.
