Complete Guide to Schengen Visa Application From UAE in 2026

OOpen Visa Global Team9 min read

Everything you need to apply for a Schengen visa from Dubai or Abu Dhabi — the documents, the €90 fee, which consulate to choose, and the mistakes that cause refusals.

Overview

Applying for a Schengen visa from the UAE is one of the most common processes we handle. A single short-stay (Type C) visa covers all 27 Schengen countries — but which consulate you apply to, and which operator runs its application centre, is decided for you by rules most applicants don't know exist.

This guide covers the current requirements, the fee as it stands after the June 2024 increase, and the specific mistakes that cost UAE applicants their approval. For the full sourced document-by-document breakdown, see our Schengen short-stay visa requirements page.

Who Needs a Schengen Visa?

Your requirement follows your passport, not your UAE residence.

UAE passport holders travel visa-free to the Schengen Area for short stays. UAE residents holding Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and most other passports need a short-stay Type C visa.

This catches people out constantly. Two colleagues in the same Dubai office can face entirely different requirements for the same trip.

Which Consulate Do You Apply To?

You do not get to choose freely. The rule is:

1. Apply to your main destination — the country where you will spend the most nights.

2. If nights are split evenly, apply to the country you will enter first.

Picking a consulate because its appointments are easier to get is a genuine cause of problems, and consulates do check itineraries against the application.

Which Operator Handles It

This is where appointments get wasted. Not every Schengen country uses the same application centre:

DestinationOperator in the UAE
FranceTLScontact (Al Quoz, Dubai)
GermanyVFS Global (Dubai and Abu Dhabi)
ItalyVFS Global (Dubai centre has a residency catchment)
NetherlandsVFS Global
SpainBLS International

Confirm the operator for your destination before booking anything.

Required Documents

The standard file for a Schengen tourist visa from the UAE:

  • Completed and signed application form
  • Passport with at least two blank pages and three months' validity beyond your departure from the area
  • Two photographs meeting ICAO biometric standards at 35x45mm
  • UAE residence visa copy, valid well beyond your return date
  • Emirates ID copy, front and back
  • Round-trip flight reservation
  • Accommodation proof for the full stay
  • Travel medical insurance with minimum EUR 30,000 cover, valid across the whole Schengen Area for the entire trip, including emergency treatment, hospitalisation and repatriation
  • Bank statements for the last three to six months, stamped by the bank
  • Salary certificate on company letterhead
  • NOC from your employer
  • Cover letter explaining the purpose of the trip

Fees

The consulate fee rose with effect from 11 June 2024:

ApplicantFee
AdultsEUR 90
Children aged 6–11EUR 45
Children under 6Free

On top of the consulate fee, the application centre charges its own service fee, set separately. Confirm that figure when you book your appointment.

Both are generally non-refundable, even if your visa is refused. That is the real cost of a weak application.

Processing Time

Standard processing is commonly quoted around 15 calendar days, extending considerably in peak season. Consulates can request additional documents, which restarts the clock.

Apply six to eight weeks before travel, and do not book non-refundable flights before the visa is issued.

Common Mistakes That Cause Refusals

  • Bank statements without a bank stamp. An unstamped printout is not accepted evidence.
  • Insurance below the EUR 30,000 threshold, or that doesn't cover the whole area for the whole trip.
  • Booking non-refundable travel before approval. Book refundable reservations for the application; buy the real ticket after.
  • Applying at the wrong consulate — see the main-destination rule above.
  • Large unexplained deposits shortly before applying. A sudden balance jump invites questions about whether the funds are genuinely yours.
  • Inconsistent names or dates across the passport, form and supporting documents.
  • An itinerary that doesn't match the bookings submitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply if my UAE residence visa expires soon after my trip?

Most Schengen consulates in the UAE expect your residence permit to remain valid for a period beyond your return date, and several will not accept an application at all once it has expired or been cancelled. Resolve the renewal before applying.

How much money should I have in my account?

There is no universal published minimum. Consulates assess whether your funds credibly support the trip you have described — a week in Paris and a month across four countries are not the same test. Consistency between your declared income and your statements matters more than a headline balance.

Does a previous refusal ruin my chances?

No, but it has to be addressed. A reapplication that ignores the refusal reason usually fails the same way. See our refusal recovery service for how we approach a reapplication.

Can I get a multiple-entry Schengen visa first time?

It is possible but not typical. Multiple-entry visas with longer validity are more commonly issued to applicants with an established history of compliant Schengen travel.

Need Help?

Our Schengen visa service prepares the complete file — document review, cover letter, and a check against the specific consulate's requirements before you submit. Fees, rules and processing times are set by the consulates and change; always confirm the current position with the relevant consulate or the European Commission's visa policy pages before you travel.
