A Schengen visa covers travel across the Schengen Area on a single authorisation, but you do not get to choose freely which country you apply to. The rule that decides it — and the insurance threshold — are where most UAE applications go wrong before they are even submitted.
Does this depend on my passport?
Emirati nationals travel to the Schengen Area visa-free for short stays. Most other UAE residents apply for a short-stay (Type C) visa, and the requirements are essentially uniform across member states.
Where the application is lodged
You apply to the consulate of your main destination — the country where you will spend the most nights. If nights are evenly split, you apply to your country of first entry. Applications from the UAE are generally lodged through the relevant application centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
Key points for Schengen applications
- The adult short-stay visa fee rose from €80 to €90, and the fee for children aged 6–11 from €40 to €45, with effect from 11 June 2024. Children under six remain free.
- Travel medical insurance must cover a minimum of €30,000 for the full duration and the whole Schengen Area, including emergency treatment, hospitalisation and repatriation.
- Photographs must meet ICAO biometric standards at 35x45mm — the same standard as a modern passport photo, and strictly enforced.
- Your passport needs at least two blank pages and at least three months' validity beyond your intended departure from the area.
- A VFS Global service charge applies on top of the consulate fee and is set separately.
- Your UAE residence visa should have several months of validity remaining at the time of application.
What goes wrong most often
- Applying to the wrong consulate — main destination is decided by nights spent, not by which appointment was easiest to get.
- Buying travel insurance below the €30,000 minimum, or that does not cover the whole area for the whole trip.
