How Long Does a US B1/B2 Visa Take From Dubai?

OOpen Visa Global Team7 min read

US visa services in the UAE were disrupted through 2026 and waits are long. See how the process works and how far ahead to start.

Start Much Earlier Than You Think

The honest answer to "how long does it take" is: longer than most people expect, and the position has moved repeatedly through 2026.

Routine US visa services in the UAE were suspended on 13 July 2026, with non-emergency staff relocated. Limited nonimmigrant visa appointments became available again from around 1 August 2026, while immigrant visa services remained suspended.

Reported waits during 2026 have been substantial — many months rather than weeks, and beyond a year for some categories at some posts. Work visa categories in particular saw some of the longest average waits worldwide.

Do not plan against any number you read on a blog, including this one. Check the US Department of State's visa appointment wait-time tool and ae.usembassy.gov for the current position before you make any commitment. For the full document checklist, see our US B1/B2 visa requirements page.

The Process, Step by Step

1. Complete the DS-160

The online nonimmigrant visa application. Budget a proper sitting for it — it asks for detailed travel, employment and family history, and errors are awkward to correct after submission.

The photo has US-specific requirements that differ from other countries. Do not reuse a Schengen photo — check yours with our photo checker first.

2. Pay the MRV fee

The application fee is set by the Department of State and has been revised; confirm the current amount on the official appointment portal rather than relying on a published figure.

3. Book the interview

Appointments at the UAE posts have been released on Friday mornings, local time, outside holidays. Given the waits, book the first thing you can get and continue checking for earlier openings.

UAE residents may generally apply at either the Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate General in Dubai — and wait times have differed noticeably between them, so check both. See our United States visa overview for the full picture.

4. Attend the interview

Interviews are typically short. You will usually be told the outcome at the window.

5. Passport return

If approved, passports are returned by courier, typically within several business days.

About 221(g) Administrative Processing

Some applications are placed in administrative processing after the interview. This is not a refusal — it means further review is required before a decision.

Duration varies enormously and cannot be predicted or accelerated. Never book non-refundable travel while an application is in 221(g).

What You Can Actually Influence

You cannot influence appointment availability or administrative processing. You can influence:

  • DS-160 accuracy. Errors and inconsistencies create problems that surface at the interview.
  • Document organisation. Have everything ordered and ready even though you may not be asked for all of it.
  • Clarity about your purpose. Short, direct, honest answers. The interview is brief; rambling does not help.
  • Evidence of ties. Employment, residence and family connections that give you reason to return.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pay to get an earlier appointment?

Be very cautious of anyone offering guaranteed or expedited US appointments for a fee. Availability is controlled by the US mission. Expedited requests exist for genuine emergencies and are decided by the consular section, not by an agency.

Can I apply in another country with shorter waits?

Applying outside your country of residence is possible but generally disadvantageous — posts prioritise their own residents and you may be treated as an out-of-district applicant.

How long is a B1/B2 valid once issued?

Validity is set at issuance and varies by nationality under reciprocity schedules. Many applicants receive long multi-year multiple-entry visas, but this is not guaranteed.

Does a previous refusal affect the wait?

No — refusal affects the assessment, not the queue. You reapply through the same appointment system.

How We Help

We prepare your DS-160 and supporting documentation and run mock interviews so you are ready when the appointment arrives. We have no influence over appointment availability or administrative processing, and we will never claim otherwise.
