Italy Visa from the UAE — What Actually Applies to You

A trip to Italy is a Schengen short-stay application, so one authorisation covers the wider Schengen Area — but only if you lodge it with the right consulate, through the right operator. Italy applications in the UAE are handled by VFS Global, and you apply here when Italy is where you will spend the most nights.

Does this depend on my passport?

Emirati nationals travel to the Schengen Area visa-free for short stays. Most other UAE residents apply for a short-stay (Type C) visa, and the requirements are essentially uniform across member states.

Where the application is lodged

Italy's applications in the UAE run through VFS Global, but the Dubai centre has a residency catchment that catches people out — see below. Apply to Italy when it is your main destination by nights spent; if another Schengen country accounts for more of your stay, the application belongs with that country instead.

Key points for Italy applications

  • The Italy Visa Application Centre in Dubai accepts applicants holding residence visas issued by Dubai or the Northern Emirates — Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. Abu Dhabi residents are handled separately.
  • Standard processing runs around 15 working days from the appointment date, so book well ahead of travel.
  • An original NOC letter from your employer or sponsor is conventionally expected alongside the standard financial evidence.
  • The visa fee, the €30,000 insurance minimum, the photo standard and the core document list are the same for every Schengen country — what changes with Italy is who receives your file and how you book.

What goes wrong most often

  • Booking with the wrong operator — Italy applications go through VFS Global in the UAE.
  • Applying on a UAE residence visa that has expired or been cancelled; most Schengen consulates here will refuse to accept it.
  • Applying to Italy because its appointments are easier to get, when another Schengen country is your main destination by nights.

Italy visa questions we get from UAE residents

Do I apply to Italy or another Schengen country?

Apply to Italy if it is where you will spend the most nights. If your nights are split evenly across several Schengen countries, apply to whichever one you enter first. Choosing a consulate because its appointments are easier to get is a common cause of avoidable problems.

Can I apply for an Italy visa in Dubai if I live in Abu Dhabi?

The Italy Visa Application Centre in Dubai accepts applicants whose residence visa was issued by Dubai or the Northern Emirates — Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain or Fujairah. Abu Dhabi residents are handled through the separate Abu Dhabi route, so confirm which centre applies to your residence visa before booking.

How long does an Italy Schengen visa take from Dubai?

Standard processing is approximately 15 working days from your appointment date, and longer in peak season. Do not book non-refundable travel against that timeline.

How much is a Italy visa from the UAE?

Italy charges the standard Schengen consulate fee: €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, effective 11 June 2024; under-sixes are free. VFS Global adds its own service charge on top, set separately — confirm the current figure when you book your appointment.

Rules change without notice. Fees, processing times and eligibility vary by nationality and are set by the destination authority, not by us. Always confirm the current position with the official source before you book travel. European Commission — Schengen visa policy

If You've Been Refused Before

A previous refusal — for Italy or elsewhere — doesn't rule out reapplying. We review the refusal letter, identify the gap, and rebuild your file to address it directly. No service can guarantee the outcome, but a stronger file is always worth preparing.
