Japan Visa Rules for UAE Residents: Who Needs One and What It Costs

Source: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan — verify current rules with the Japanese mission

Whether you need a Japan visa depends on your passport, not your UAE residence. Emirati nationals travel visa-free; most other nationalities apply and pay.

It Depends on Your Passport, Not Your Residence

This is the single most common misunderstanding we see. Holding a UAE residence visa does not determine your Japan entry requirements — your passport nationality does.

UAE Nationals: Visa-Free Short Stays

Emirati passport holders travel to Japan under a short-stay visa waiver. Because no visa is issued, there is no visa fee to pay.

  • Stay permitted: up to 90 days, extended from the previous 30 days with effect from 1 July 2025
  • Passport: must be an ICAO-compliant biometric passport
  • Required step: a one-time passport pre-registration at a Japanese diplomatic mission before your first visa-free trip

That pre-registration is the part travellers miss. Without it, the waiver does not apply at the border.

Everyone Else: A Visa Is Required, and Fees Rose in July 2026

UAE residents on Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi, Egyptian and most other passports must apply for a Japan visa in the normal way. Japan increased its visa issuance fees with effect from 1 July 2026, so any application submitted on or after that date is charged at the newer, higher rate.

Confirm the exact current fee for your nationality and visa type with the Embassy of Japan in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai before you apply — published figures go out of date quickly.

Where to Apply From the UAE

  • Embassy of Japan, Abu Dhabi
  • Consulate-General of Japan, Dubai

Typical supporting documents include your passport, application form, photograph, flight itinerary, accommodation booking and bank statements. Japan conventionally expects a structured day-by-day itinerary, and it is taken seriously rather than treated as a formality.

Correction Notice

An earlier version of this article stated that Japan had temporarily waived visa fees for UAE passport holders until December 2026. That was incorrect and has been removed. Emirati nationals are visa-exempt for short stays — a standing waiver, not a temporary fee promotion — and Japan's visa fees for visa-requiring nationalities increased rather than decreased in 2026.
