A trip to Portugal is a Schengen short-stay application, so one authorisation covers the wider Schengen Area — but only if you lodge it with the right consulate, through the right operator. Portugal applications in the UAE are handled by VFS Global, and you apply here when Portugal is where you will spend the most nights.
Emirati nationals travel to the Schengen Area visa-free for short stays. Most other UAE residents apply for a short-stay (Type C) visa, and the requirements are essentially uniform across member states.
Portugal is one of the most heavily applied-for Schengen visas from the UAE, and VFS appointment slots at both the Dubai (Wafi Mall) and Abu Dhabi centres are reported to fill quickly as a result. Apply to Portugal when it is your main destination by nights spent; if another Schengen country accounts for more of your stay, the application belongs with that country instead.
Apply to Portugal if it is where you will spend the most nights. If your nights are split evenly across several Schengen countries, apply to whichever one you enter first. Choosing a consulate because its appointments are easier to get is a common cause of avoidable problems.
Portugal charges the standard Schengen consulate fee: €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, effective 11 June 2024; under-sixes are free. VFS Global adds its own service charge on top, set separately — confirm the current figure when you book your appointment.
